Identification and Background
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (commonly called Mitsubishi) is a Japanese automaker. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was founded by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1970. By production, Mitsubishi Motors was the sixth-largest Japanese automobile manufacturer and the nineteenth-largest automaker worldwide. In October 2016, Mitsubishi was partially bought by Nissan and became a member of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
The Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation was previously a part of Mitsubishi Motors. The Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation produces commercial-grade trucks, buses, and heavy construction equipment. Now, the Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation is owned by Daimler AG, a German automotive corporation, and is separate from Mitsubishi Motors.
In 2000, Mitsubishi admitted that it systematically hid four defect problems in Mitsubishi-branded vehicles. In 2004, the company confessed to 26 more covered-up defects dating back to vehicles from the 1977 model year. These defects included fuel leaks, malfunctioning clutches, and failing brakes. Mitsubishi recalled 163,707 vehicles for free repair. Recalled vehicles included 7,274 outside of Japan and 156,433 inside the Japanese market.
Mitsubishi vehicles can be identified by the Mitsubishi emblem, which includes three diamonds arranged to form a three-pointed star. The diamonds may be red, black, blue, grey, or white. Sometimes, the name “MITSUBISHI” is printed in capital letters underneath the three-diamond emblem.
