Background and Identification
Mazda, officially named Mazda Motor Corporation, is a Japanese automaker founded in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda. Mazda was founded as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. and renamed to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. in 1927. Since its founding, however, every automobile sold by the company bore the Mazda name. Throughout World War II, Toyo Kogyo produced weapons for the Japanese military. Toyo Kogyo adopted the name Mazda in 1984. The name Mazda derives from Matsuda’s name and is also associated with the Zoroastrian God of Light (Ahura Mazda).
Starting in the 1960s, Mazda differentiated itself from other Japanese automakers by developing the Wankel rotary engine. Mazda is the only manufacturer of Wankel-type engines and is the only automaker to have produced a Wankel-powered pickup truck. Mazda is also the only automaker to produce a rotary-powered bus or station wagon. Rotary-powered and piston-powered Mazda vehicles were sold worldwide beginning in the late 1970s. Because rotary-powered vehicles are relatively inefficient, Mazda focused on marketing the rotary engine for sports cars rather than mainstream vehicles.
Mazda produced 1.5 million vehicles in 2015 for worldwide sales and was the fifteenth largest automaker by production. Mazda vehicles can be identified by the Mazda emblem, which depicts a pair of wings in the shape of a ‘V’ inside of an oval, and the Mazda logo, which portrays the name “Mazda” in lower-case letters.
