This is exactly what happens to mine. My fix takes 30 secs with no tools. Dyson go through 3 instructions then tell you a new battery is needed if nothing works. I find this strange as it works well for 10 secs and then complete cut out. But before you do this, my fix worked on mine 3 times now as the problem occurs every couple of months. Go to charging point unplug it from Mains. Reconnect and put dyson on charge point then press the trigger on the dyson for 15-20 secs. Nothing happens but when I take it off charging point Dyson is back to normal

Before you try my suggestion above! First the filter should not just be cleaned under a tap but take it apart and completely clean it out. Running it under the tap will not properly get all the gunk out that is stuck to the inside of the filter. This will no doubt be the root cause of the issue
Perfect!. Spot on Zog. Holding the trigger as you described for 12-20 sec did the trick. Thank you.
Spot on is right!! Worked perfectly - so glad I looked online for solutions.
Thank you Zog ,
It worked!
I have searched for weeks than asked the right question and got you.
This worked!
Hey, I had the same problem (ran for 10 seconds then cut out and wouldn’t run on MAX power at all) and tried everything listed, which was good to do anyway but in the end I ordered a new battery off eBay and it was that!

Worked brilliant thank you
I had the same problem with my dyson 6 and 7 and this fix worked with both! I don’t understand why dyson doesn’t add this fix to their hotline. I guess it helps sell batteries. :-/
Thank you, Zog!
Dyson decided to sent me a new battery pack. Got it replaced and recommended 5 hours charging time prior putting it to use. Keep you posted with the outcome shortly.
=== Update (09/13/2018) ===
Dyson V8 Absolute vacuum issue fixed. Item under warranty and the problem seems to go away after replacing new battery pack supplied by Dyson. Battery replacement procedure easily found on youtube.
I have a dyson 7, new battery from dyson, seems like it charged....but won't turn on. Did all the reset test, still nothing
New Battery fixed mine, I put new filters in first but no difference.
I bought from Dyson, as the cheap Chinese batteries get a bad wrap and can’t be trusted on battery size and have no warranty
I did a complete teardown and cleaning, yet the problem persisted. Then I noticed that the motorized floor brush was spinning intermittently, then the main unit would shut down. Seems that the motor separated from the worm gear. I replaced the motor unit-problem solved.

Thanks for the comment, mine is 100% clean and even without any extension it’s not working on high speed, I just realized that on low speed it’s working
Mine works fine on low. High stops after 15 seconds.
@Michelle Anderson how do you make it stay on high
Zog, this is a posting for the ages! A couple of years ago my Dyson stick stopped working, and your advice solved the problem. But by the time the problem re-occurred recently I’d forgotten what to do. Most of the advice on line points to a new battery, but I found your post again, and voila! all working perfectly again. So thanks a lot.

Old thread but I know the answer. My Dyson V8 symptoms were that it would go on/off, qickly for 7 times in a row and then stop altogether. Release the trigger and it would do the same again.
Bought a new battery and symptoms stayed the same. Replaced the cone shaped filter in the top and all was as good as new.
PS… I also replaced the rear filter just for kicks.

i tried to order the cone shaped filter and they have been out of stock for over 6 months now. Nor sure where the rear filter is
the rear filter is the one on top that twists off. Did you take the inside filter apart, just rinsing it does not clean the filter, stuff gets thru somehow and piles up inside the cloth cone, you have to take it apart to see that. Dyson doesn't mention that.
Where is the cone shape filter?
It’s probably an obvious thing but I’m clueless
The cone shaped filter sits at the top of the unit. It’s purple, has a little knob/ nipple on top: pull it up.
Other may have just a wide round-like flat “cover”, pull it up.
hi. I just wanted to repeat the answer that worked for me..when I return the vac to the charging stand, and ‘click’ it in, it does NOT start charging and the blue light does not turn on. I have to physically and intentionally push the two pieces together, the blue light turns on, it recharges, and works perfectly. Don’t have to do the series of strange steps, and the battery is fine.

I only get 15 minutes use on my Dyson on high? Anyone else have this problem?.
No.one has mentioned overheating. I have a duolite given to me as a gift end of October 2021. Very lightly used mainly on hard floors. It seems to be charged but cuts out every few minutes, worryingly overheats hot air coming from above cylinder suction very poor blows dust along the hard floor not lifting it v.disappointed please advise
Didn't worn for me very sad
It only works for a little while, I had to buy new battery, just wish when it started doing it just a couple of weeks after I got it, I would have contacted Dyson, my daughter did she had the same problem, was just a couple of weeks after she got it, they replaced her battery, free of charge no problem,
I know a friend had same problem, they also replaced free of charge,
I advise anyone just to contact them as soon as they start having this problem.

Your post wasn't clear, did changing the battery fix the problem? How old was your machine?
I tried the reset advice above, after buying a new battery and having the same problem, and sadly it still only stays on for 5-10 seconds. I also took apart most of it to clean it. It was pretty dirty. Maybe I burned out to motor? But if I did that, I think it wouldn’t turn on at all. I’m at a loss for what to do, other than get a new one. Mine is about 6 years old. I expected with the price for it to last longer.

My son did some googling and it is possible that it’s a bad magnet inside that keeps the power going. I don’t have the technical skills to solder a new magnet inside, so am shopping for a new vacuum. And second thinking about getting anotherDyson, though I loved the one I had, till it stopped working.
Buy a new battery....... I got a Sony Battery from Ebay for around $20. I was shocked when it started working normally again. I did all those things, cleaning, etc. I couldn't imagine it was the battery but it was. P.S. make sure you take apart the long center filter. I was surprised that there were feather and other solid things, I still can't figure how they could have gotten in the center of what seems like a sold tube!!!!.

Thanks. I did buy a new battery, but it didn’t helped. 🙁

It worked! I’ve been trying to fix my hoover for months and this solution worked straight away! Thanks!!

Thank you so much. I replaced the battery. And the transformer. And it still would not run for more than 2 seconds. With your fix it started up right away! I was 2 minutes away from throwing the unit in the trash bin.

by rosezerafa
OMG it worked!! Zog you are a genius. How'd you come up with this?

Yep! Worked for me too — can't believe I've struggled on without my turbo for so long thinking it would cost me money (as usual!)
