iFixit Supports the Community

We donate a portion of every sale to nonprofits that are making a difference in the world. iFixit financially supports all of these wonderful organizations, and we have close working relationships with many of them.

Established in 1997, the Basel Action Network is a non-profit works to protect people in less developed countries from the e-waste generated by more-developed countries. They work to track e-waste, end-of-life cargo ships, and plastic pollution, and hold companies accountable for not following the stipulations for proper care of these waste streams set forth by the Basel Convention.

EFF is the leading civil liberties group defending your rights in the digital world. We are indebted to their work paving a path for organizations like ours to operate freely. The EFF paid for the successful defense of our good friends at the PowerPage and AppleInsider when Apple's legal team tried to force them to reveal anonymous sources. We support their ongoing work to ensure our digital liberties are secure.

The Fixers Collective is a group of people operating in New York's Five Boroughs dedicated to helping people fix their stuff and educating them about the process. They encourage the public to fix or reuse things by developing the skills necessary to maintain their stuff—not just their tech.

Founded in 2009, this collective helps the public (especially kids) learn how to disassemble their stuff, be it toys, electronics, appliances, computers, or what have you. It may not always end up getting fixed, but attendees gain the experience of repair and get to learn how their stuff is put together. Fixers benefit from the Fixit Clinic's "all-ages do-it-together hands-on STEM-oriented fix-n-learn community disassembly and discovery."

The Free Software Foundation is dedicated to promoting computer users' right to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer programs. Our servers run on 100% open and free operating systems, and we give back to the open source community both financially and with engineering effort.

Greenpeace is a leading proponent of greener electronics, and has been instrumental in pressuring companies like Apple to switch to manufacturing processes that reduce toxic chemicals.

The Internet Archive is an archive of just about everything -- from copies of web pages and audio recordings to videos, books and texts, and images. Just one copy of their library of resources takes more than 45 Petabytes of server space. Their collection is available for free for anyone to access. To quote them, their mission is to "provide Universal Access to All Knowledge." That's an idea we can whole-heartedly get behind.

The Restart Project is an organization that hosts, among other things, Restart Radio and Restart Parties, where the public gathers to try to fix their broken stuff -- no matter what it is! Through these efforts, they are able to compile data and anecdotes to help aid Right to Repair legislation in London and, increasingly, across the globe.

Originally an online documentary by founder Annie Leonard, the Story of Stuff has grown to more than a million members in their Changemaker community, helping to bring about social and environmental change relating to all of our stuff.

The Society of Women Engineers works to advocate for a voice for women within the engineering sphere. They empower women by facilitating networking and other support between women in the engineering industry. They work to be a driver of inclusivity and diversity in all professions.

The US-based sector of the Public Interest Research Group, an organization that helps lobby for political change. As it pertains to us, the US PIRG helps advocate for Right to Repair legislation.

While iFixit has a global focus, we also give back to our local community in San Luis Obispo, California.

Bike SLO County aims to make bicycling in San Luis Obispo county safe for all community members. Also provides services for the Bike Kitchen: a place where people can go to build a bike from the ground up, fix up an old bike, or purchase a gently used one, all with the guidance and experience of Bike Kitchen staff. Organizes the RideWell program as well, making bikes available at no cost to those with mobility related challenges.

Establishes funding for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), which enables Cal Poly students to work on internships related to engineering.

The El Camino Homeless Organization provides meal, shelter and support services to the homeless and hungry of northern San Luis Obispo County. They are volunteer-based and run by a coalition of churches, service organizations and individuals.

Journeyman International is an organization comprised mainly of volunteers who help design architecture or engineering projects in developing countries. Students and professionals get the opportunity to collaborate on humanitarian projects worldwide. The design process is funded by donations and is fueled by volunteer support.

RISE provides intervention and treatment services to survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence and their loved ones in SLO County.

Stand Strong has been working to help end domestic violence in San Luis Obispo County since the 1970s. They provide services to survivors of domestic violence and work with the community to help bring about a society free from "intimate and political wars."

The SLO Food Bank operates several direct food distribution programs throughout San Luis Obispo County. These programs feed hungry children, low-income seniors, and individuals and families that don't earn enough money to make ends meet here on the Central Coast.

Here at iFixit, we match 100% of our employees’ contributions to charity, and give the option of three paid volunteer days per year to provide time for our employees to help “Fix the World.” Here are some of the charities and organizations that we contribute to:

The Buddy Dog Humane Society is a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats based out of Sudbury, Massachusetts.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute provides care to cancer patients and advances the treatment and understanding of cancers and related diseases. Operating out of Boston, MA, they work to train future physicians and scientists and design programs that benefit public health.

French Hospital is a not-for-profit, community hospital focused on providing high quality, state-of-the-art health care. The Foundation supports the community through charitable healthcare programs, as well as the advancement of healthcare programs and technology at the hospital.

GleanSLO utilizes volunteers to pick excess produce from local farms and homes, and donates it to our local food banks. Through this, they are able to help reduce food wasted from agricultural abundance and contribute to providing healthy and nutritious food to those in our community.

This grassroots organization employs various media sources to guide and encourage young farmers. They promote the sustainability of agriculture through restorative land usage.

Founded by a high school student at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, The IT Club aims to reduce e-waste by repairing and refurbishing older computers and laptops and bring them to underrepresented students. The IT Club is also dedicated to enable learning opportunities for underserved students and communities by sharing STEM knowledge and providing free IT services.

Jack's Helping Hand exists to provide support to the families of children with unmet mental, physical, and medical needs, and who are battling cancer or living with other special needs.

An NPR station, KCBX serves California's Central Coast with alternative music selections and news on a local, national, and global level.

Lifewater International builds wells and promotes good sanitation practices for those living in poverty. Their mission is to ensure that every person in underserved communities has access to clean water and a sustainable infrastructure in place.

The Little Sisters of the Poor provides support to the sick and the elderly through a network of charitable contributions from community members.

Medic Alert Foundation creates Medic Alert bracelets that warn of medical allergies, conditions, medications, etc. They also maintain a database and 24-hour call center so emergency responders can get information to treat you safely, even if you are unable to tell them anything. They've saved countless lives, but don't really get a lot of attention or help to continue.

We also use Carbonfund.org to help us "Reduce what you can, offset what you can’t." We purchase carbon offsets for travel and other activities where we can't have a neutral footprint.

We are working to document the global e-waste problem. If more people knew what happened to devices after they died, they would throw away less and fix more.

We are building a community of people who want to fix the planet. We are working together with people all over the world to show people how to fix things. With your help, we can keep devices out of landfills!
